Malachi

Evening Services in Jan-Feb 2023

Malachi was written to a people who were in trouble. God’s people had returned from exile in Babylon with great fanfare and enthusiasm not long before, but by the time Malachi was writing, the party was over. God’s priests, who were supposed to lead his people to greater love for and obedience to him had instead led them into compromised religion- and the people had very willingly followed.

Chapter 3:7 therefore functions as a good summary verse of the whole book: “Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty.”

For those of us who might identify signs of spiritual half-heartedness within ourselves, (or are keen to make sure we don’t drift into it!), Malachi’s call to remain committed to the God who has first committed himself to us is a timely one.
