The Gospel of Mark: The King's Cross

Morning Sermons from October 2022

As an author, Mark isn't really one for building suspense. He tells his readers exactly what he is writing about right out of the gate: the good news about Jesus, the King (1:1). Whilst Mark writes a reliable account of Jesus’ life based on eyewitness testimony, therefore, he doesn’t only recount the details of Jesus’ life as a conventional biographer might. Rather, Mark preaches good news. The shock in Mark’s gospel, though, is that the good news will see that King, King Jesus, on a cross.

Considering the King and his cross together in Mark’s gospel will speak to those of us who have yet to trust in Jesus about the world’s, and our own, biggest problem, and about God’s extraordinary solution. But it will also be of real help to those who are already following Jesus, persuading us of quite how good the good news is, and convincing us of what it really looks like to take that good news seriously.
